How do you make a shiny coffee table look modern and dead flat? Follow along, here is how:

My friend Barbara and her husband, Don wanted me to give this coffee table a modern look. The layers of old polyurethane needed to be removed. We used palm sander with 80 grit sandpaper, followed by a second pass using 120 grit sandpaper.
80 grit sandpaper is a rough sandpaper used to take off thick layers of paint or polyurethane.

Here is Don using the palm sander to remove the layers of polyurethane. This took only about 20 minutes.

Look at that beautiful wood grain after sanding. Barbara had thought about painting it but after seeing the beautiful wood she wondered how we could enhance it, and I had just the products in mind!
The Plan:
I would paint the base gray using British grey Paint Couture
The wood top will be glazed with Light Brown Sugar Glaze Couture – this will really enhance that beautiful wood grain and give it a stained look. I will use the glaze as a stain.
The final coat will be Dead Flat Couture Topcoat – this will be very protective and it will have no shine at all, just what Barbara wanted.
After sanding I wiped the dust away on top with a damp terry towel. On the base I used Krud Kutter Gloss-Off to clean and remove some of the sheen in order to prepare the surface for painting.

British Grey almost covered the base in 1 coat, after 4 hours I added another coat. Two coats of paint make the surface durable.
On the top I applied Light Brown Sugar Glaze Couture with a large foam brush. Here the glaze was not removed, just applied with a foam brush. I went over the surface with generous amounts of glaze, one row at a time, smoothing it out as I go. I went over each row a couple times watching that glaze even out and soak in, then I moved on across the piece.

I let the glaze dry 24 hours and applied a second coat in the same way, again letting it dry throughly about 24 hours.
I used Dead Flat Couture Topcoat. Always stir the topcoat, never shake because that may create bubbles. I poured about 1/6 of the can in a painting tray and used our Lambs Wool Applicator to apply the topcoat.

Pictured above is the Lambs Wool Applicator. Some times I use a clean soft bristle brush like the Zibra Sash Brush to apply topcoat. On a large flat surface I choose the Lambs Wool Applicator.
Here is a link to a short video showing how to apply topcoat with the Lambs Wool Applicator:

I applied 1 coat, let it dry four hours, then applied a second coat. I did not sand between coats on this table, the Dead Flat Couture Topcoat leveled very evenly!

I love how the wood is enhanced by the Light Brown Sugar Glaze and the Dead Flat Couture Topcoat.
